The survived Armageddon to sail the oceans of a ravaged nightmare world
THE HOLOCAUST HAS ENDED AS ABRUPTLY AS IT BEGAN...
On top secret maneuvers beneath the polar ice cap, the awesome nuclear submarine U.S.S Liberator surfaces to find the Earth in flames. Civilization is no more—once-great cities have been reduced to smoking piles of radioactive ash. Patrolling the West Coast of a shattered America, the devastated crewmen encounter a world out of their darkest nightmares—where savagery and death rule, where brutalized nature runs terrifyingly amok.
Fate has entrusted the brave men of the Liberator with one final, impossible mission: to seek out survivors in the war-blackened land... and to use the mightiest warship the world has ever known to forge a bold new future in the fires of chaos!
"PREPARE TO SURFACE."
The sea was calm, placid. The sky was gray with no clouds, although a film of dust seemed to hover in the upper atmosphere. Land on both sides of the Bering Strait could be seen, on both shores smoke rose listlessly from countless fires.
The world was burning. And no one remained to put out the flames.
Donovan watched in silence. One by one, the crew members came up on deck, walking to and fro, letting the magnitude of the tragedy sink in. At last Chief Engineer Smith spoke, calling up to the tower. "How could this happen, Captain?"
"We may never know," Donovan said.
