The raiders' wags rolled through the smoking ruin of the convoy.

Intermittent machine-gun fire sounded, blasting out in full-throated roar over the occasional small-arms chatter. The raiders left no one alive. Almost no one, Brigid amended when she saw one of the wag groups unload and pull out a man dressed in Magistrate black.

She focused on the man, barely able to discern his features at the distance even with the high-power magnification available. "Do you know him?" she asked.

"Kearney," Grant answered. "Bastard must have rated a promotion."

A warwag stopped in front of Kearney. His guards forced him into a kneeling position, their weapons trained on him.

The warwag's side door opened and Brigid focused the binoculars again as the raiders' leader stepped out. She wasn't prepared for what she saw...
